Five Chinese character games you can play today

These five games train you to recognize characters and the components inside them. Each game has rules, a sample round and an answer key, and you can play most of them with paper and a pen.

What these games train

Character games build recognition. That means seeing 河 and knowing it means river, or noticing that 休, 体 and 你 share the person component 亻. Recognition is a real reading skill, but it is not speaking, listening or complete Mandarin. Pair these games with listening practice. See Chinese learning games for options that cover those other skills.

One term needs care. A dictionary radical, 部首 bùshǒu, is the single component a particular dictionary uses to file a character. A character can also contain other components that carry meaning or sound. A familiar shape can also appear in a character without being its filing radical. The games below say component unless they mean the dictionary radical.

Game 1: Odd one out

Rules: Each row has four characters. Three share a component. Find the one that does not, and name the shared component.

  1. 河 hé river, 海 hǎi sea, 打 dǎ hit, 湖 hú lake
  2. 休 xiū rest, 你 nǐ you, 体 tǐ body, 林 lín grove
  3. 推 tuī push, 拉 lā pull, 灯 dēng lamp, 找 zhǎo look for
Answer key
  1. 打. The others contain 氵, the water form of 水.
  2. 林. The others contain 亻, the side form of 人 (person).
  3. 灯. The others contain 扌, the side form of 手 (hand). 灯 contains 火 instead.

Game 2: Meaning sort

Rules: Draw three boxes labeled fire, water and hand. Put each character in a box based on a component you can see, then check the meaning.

Sample round: 烧 shāo burn, 洗 xǐ wash, 推 tuī push, 江 jiāng river, 炒 chǎo stir-fry, 拍 pāi pat

Answer key
  • Fire (火): 烧, 炒
  • Water (氵): 洗, 江
  • Hand (扌): 推, 拍

Game 3: Memory pairs

Rules: Make 12 cards: six characters and six English meanings. Shuffle them and lay them face down. Turn over two at a time. You keep a matching pair only if you can also say the pinyin aloud. The player with the most pairs wins.

Sample set: 山, 火, 木, 口, 耳, 足 with mountain, fire, tree, mouth, ear, foot.

Answer key

山 shān mountain; 火 huǒ fire; 木 mù tree, wood; 口 kǒu mouth; 耳 ěr ear; 足 zú foot.

Game 4: Component builder

Rules: Write components on scraps of paper. Combine two of them to make a real character, then give its meaning. Each correct build scores a point.

Sample pieces: 木, 木, 亻, 日, 月, 口, 鸟

Answer key
  • 木 + 木 = 林 lín grove
  • 亻 + 木 = 休 xiū rest
  • 日 + 月 = 明 míng bright
  • 口 + 鸟 = 鸣 míng a bird's call

Game 5: Meaning clue or no clear link

Rules: For each character, decide whether the named component is a helpful meaning clue for the modern word or has no clear link to that meaning. Argue your choice, then check the key. This game shows why components are hints to check, not rules.

  1. 热 rè hot, with 灬 at the bottom
  2. 点 diǎn dot, point, with 灬 at the bottom
  3. 想 xiǎng think, with 木 at the top left
  4. 听 tīng listen, with 口 on the left
Answer key
  1. Clue. 灬 is a form of 火, and heat fits.
  2. No clear modern meaning clue. 点 has 灬, but its everyday meanings (dot, point, o'clock) have no obvious link to fire.
  3. No direct wood meaning clue. Here 木 belongs to the larger component 相 and is not a hint about trees. The 心 (heart) at the bottom is the better clue for thinking.
  4. Loose clue. 口 is often linked with speech and sound, and many dictionaries file 听 under 口. It will not give you the meaning listen by itself.

Where the iPhone game fits

Chinese Radical Realms puts radical practice inside a story. The first region covers 火, 水, 木, 土 and 山 and ends with a boss. A second region requires a subscription and adds 耳, 足, 口, 手, 人 and 心. Those 11 radicals are what you can play today, with meanings, pinyin, tracing and optional pronunciation practice. It supports recognition and writing. It is not a complete Mandarin course.
